  • McKinley Homes expands into Texas with acquisition of Liberty Home Builders Houston

The acquisition cements McKinley Homes’ plans to expand into Houston, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

McKinley Homes, a Peachtree Corners-based land developer and builder, has purchased Liberty Home Builders Houston.

McKinley Homes declined to share financial details of the purchase.

The acquisition cements the company’s plans to expand into Houston, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

McKinley Homes owns over 6,000 lots throughout Atlanta, Alabama, North Carolina, New York and Tennessee. Its operations include single-family homes, townhouses, apartment complexes, offices and multifamily high-rise units.

Liberty Home Builders Houston, which is currently selling six single-family subdivisions in the $300,000 price range, became McKinley Homes Houston as of Monday. A Liberty Homes division in San Antonio was not part of the deal.

The company says all of the Liberty Home Builders Houston team will be retained and now work under the McKinley Homes Houston division.

“Liberty Home Builders’ excellent reputation for building quality homes in desirable communities in one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation will allow us to continue the growth trajectory of our company,” said Jinsong Yang, managing member of McKinley Homes, in a press release Monday announcing the deal.

The Houston division will be led by the former Liberty Home Builders Houston executive team. Damon Sachs will serve as president of McKinley Homes Houston, Johnny Sullivan as vice president of construction and Dennis Ulanday as vice president of sales. John Sachs, a founding partner and CEO of Liberty Home Builders Houston, has retired.

“McKinley Homes will provide us with the financial resources and homebuilding leadership expertise that will ensure that we can continue to build quality homes for Houston residents for many years to come,” Damon Sachs said in the release.

The company says the acquisition will create opportunities to “continue its growth trajectory and expand its regional business into some of the most popular homebuilding markets in the country.”

In 2022, McKinley Homes announced plans to construct a 210-unit, 16-story apartment tower in Brookhaven off Buford Highway that would replace an eight-story office tower. Units were slated to start at $1,695 for a one-bedroom, with two-bedroom units potentially starting at $2,100. But McKinley withdrew the application when Brookhaven asked it to double the size of the project; the developer said it might resubmit after more negotiations. To date, the project has not initiated planning, zoning or construction.

Zelman, a subsidiary of Walker & Dunlop, was the financial advisor to Liberty Home Builders Houston.
